Transforming canvas into breathtaking works of art
Transforming canvas into breathtaking works of art
Capturing the spirit and personality of her subjects is Connie Simons’ favorite thing to do. Growing up, she was the ninth of sixteen children on their dairy farm in Ohio. At Christmas time, Santa would bring each child only one gift, but lots of games and art supplies to share. Her love of drawing and painting grew from this wealth of art materials, the closeness of nature, and the many people in her extended family.
Connie got her BSW in social work with minors in art and early childhood education from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. She took private lessons in portraiture in the seventies and in 1998 she studied airbrush portraiture in San Francisco. She has traveled extensively throughout Europe, North Africa, South America, the Mediterranean, and the Tropics studying and painting the different lands and cultures. This has developed a unique understanding of people that adds depth to Connie’s work. A diverse artist, working and teaching in many media, her artwork and photography is owned by people throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, and Mexico. Connie worked on the Dan Shanower Memorial in downtown Naperville, sculpting many of the faces on the 9/11 Memorial Wall.
Her favorite media are watercolor, oil painting and hand-painted silk. Many pieces of her work have been created and used in local schools and churches in Naperville. She maintains studios both in her home in Naperville and downtown Chicago in the South Loop. Her daughter, Suzanna, has taught art and painted with her, specializing in large impressionistic pieces for home decorating.
Her third and youngest daughter, Brittany, enjoys designing and making jewelry.
